Job Description:

Posting Description The University of Colorado Denver is seeking nominations and applications for the position of Continuing Nursing Education (CNE) Specialist.. We are the premier research university in Colorado, serving more than 30,000 undergraduate, graduate and health professions students in Denver, Aurora and online and awarding nearly 4,000 degrees each year. The renowned researchers and award-winning faculty offer more than 100 degree programs through 13 colleges and schools. In 2008 the University was awarded more than $371 million in research grants and contracts. The Anschutz Medical Campus includes over 5 million square feet of research, educational and clinical space on 227 acres.

The Continuing Nursing Education (CNE) Specialist is a part-time (60%) non-faculty position responsible for identifying, planning, managing, and implementing the CNE program in the Office of Lifelong Learning at the University of Colorado College of Nursing. The Office of Lifelong Learning (OLL) supports professional development by providing learning opportunities for nurses, locally, regionally, nationally and internationally. The CNE program is one of several programs implemented through the OLL. As an approved provider of CNE through the Colorado Nurses Association, an accredited approver of the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation, the College of Nursing CNE program provides educational programs to meet the needs of practicing nurses, Advanced Practice providers, students, and other health care professionals. These are continuing education offerings that provide contact hour credits, and in some cases offer other professional credit in conjunction with CNE (CME, ACPE for example) depending on the target audience. The work of the office is dynamic and the Specialist will be responsible for oversight of the planning activities, managing, enhancing and/or expanding existing programs, and developing new programs, by working with College of Nursing faculty, professional nursing organizations, and other Anschutz Medical Campus partners to develop and/or deliver courses, and evaluate program outcomes to determine sustainability or plan change.

The Specialist will oversee the planning, course design, execution, and effectiveness of a system of internal controls which provides reasonable assurance that the overall CNE Program is in full compliance with all accreditation criteria, operates effectively and efficiently, ensures assets are safeguarded, and financial information reliable. The position also entails making sure the CNE Program is comprised of activities which result in improved nursing competence and performance, while adhering to institution, state, and national laws, regulations, policies, and procedures.

Examples of Work Performed
-Provide leadership for developing and coordinating knowledge-based services and conferences to support the strategic direction and vision of the College of Nursing’s educational mission and strategic goals through continuing education.
-Ensures that CNE contact hour credit programs offered are compliant with ANCC guidelines for planning, delivery and evaluation, and verification of participation.
-Coordinate the development of CNE offerings in conjunction with faculty, other professional schools, and campus clinical agencies assuring that programs provide current and applicable evidence based content, relevant to existing complex health care systems.
-Advance and maintain the CNE operation as a revenue producing unit through program fees; and for some programs, through unrestricted educational grants.
-Oversee management of office operations including work with budget office staff to monitor budget, revenue and expenditures, and supervision and direction of staff.
-Review and monitor the financial status and viability of individual offerings (i.e., focus on enhancing revenue, while maintaining quality).
-Implement a robust marketing strategy for advertising and identification and maintenance of contact with appropriate groups and registrant pools in collaboration with the CON Director of Marketing and Communications.
-Contract with clinical agencies and other external constituents to provide conferences, educational and career development resources and other services that expand the College’s reach into the larger community. Collaborate with these agencies and others to obtain resources (e.g., content experts and external funding) that allow the College to expand its offerings.
-Develop and maintain business, marketing and evaluation plans.
-Recommend processes and implement systems to improve efficiency and delivery of the office’s programs and services.

Required Education/Experience/Skills (Minimum Qualifications):
-Master’s degree in nursing is required.
-Experience in planning, developing, and operating educational programs, preferably programs that generate revenue.
-Background in CE program planning, or other educational programming, preferably in a higher education setting.

Desired qualifications:
-Master’s or doctoral degree in nursing education
-The preferred candidate will be certified through the NLN as a Certified Nurse Educator (CNE), or through the ANCC in Nursing Professional Development (RN-BC).

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
-Proficiency with computers, word processing, e-mail, spreadsheet, database, and presentation, software.
-Excellent verbal (i.e., public speaking) and written communication, interpersonal and collaboration skills including strong meeting oversight skills.
-Strong organizational, time-management and analytical skills.
-Demonstrated ability to effectively interact with people of diverse socioeconomic, cultural, disability and ethnic backgrounds.
-Ability to work cooperatively with others and provide excellent customer service to students, faculty, staff and members of the community.
-Ability to leverage faculty and staff expertise to develop innovative programming across academic and professional development, settings.
-Ability to review and read trends and issues in continuing nursing education programming.
-Knowledge of finance and the budget processes, ability to implement this knowledge.
-Knowledge of marketing educational programs, including working with advertisers, flyers, and creating websites that may include interactive functions; Flexibility, adaptability (ability to be responsive to change and be able to re-conceptualize ideas), tact, and sensitivity.
-Must be a collaborator and possess an entrepreneurial spirit.
-Knowledge of University systems, policies and procedures desired.
